What is the Safest Airline?

There are many airlines available to the modern traveller, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. These strengths range from price to quality with weaknesses ranging from shoddiness to outright incompetence. However, too few people consider the safety records of each of these different airlines, despite the fact that this is possibly the most important feature of any airline that could ever be considered. Sadly, safety is not homogenous across companies regardless of the use of almost identical technology all; some airlines just do not put as uch effort into rigorous checks. It is important for the safe passenger to at least know about airline safety so that they can make an informed choice.

Accident Records

The accident record is the basic statistic of airline safety; it is simply a record of how many times anything has gone wrong. It should definitely be taken with a pinch of salt because luck does have a lot to do with what circumstances befall any airline and larger companies will obviously suffer from proportionally more accidents.

Unfortunately, in Europe a large amount of flight safety information is kept confidential and never released to the public. Even when certain airlines are banned from the airspace of some European countries the public is not informed. We can only look at the published statistics of the number of fatal accidents by airline.

By Airline (alphabetically)

Airline (Flights) (Fatal) (Events) (RATE)

Aer Lingus (1.3M) (0) (0.00)

Air France (5.9M) (7) (0.55)

Alitalia (3.9M) (3) (0.73)

British Airways (8.27M) (2) (0.17)

British Midland (1.03M) (1) (0.39)

easyJet (0.76M) (0) (0.00)

Finnair (1.7M) (0) (0.00)

Iberia (4.5M) (4) (0.80)

Icelanair (0.39M) (0) (0.00)

KLM (2.4M) (3) (0.81)

Olympic (1.8M) (3) (1.52)

Quantas (3.26M) (0) (0.00)

Ryanair (1.27M) (0) (0.00)

Virgin (0.15M) (0) (0.00)

In summary, there are a large number of available choices for airlines and cheap flights and it makes sense to opt for the safest method possible. However, do not allow this information to worry you unduly; flying remains one of the safest ways to travel and airline safety is generally increasing over time as more watchdogs and safety comities investigate every incident and control every airline. According to the Civil Aviation Authroity, the UK has one of the best airline safety records in the world. It is good to be informed, but there is no need to be afraid.

There aren't any nonstop flights from RDU to Denmark (the only nonstop from RDU to Europe is American's daily flight to London with a big Boeing 777).

I can highly recommend SAS. They fly from Newark, Dulles, Chicago (and Seattle, but the last one don't help much–that'd be going around your elbow to get to your, well, it's the long way around!).

SAS are in cosy partnership with United via Star Alliance. Most flights to Copenhagen feed to one of SAS's gateways with United, then SAS handles the transatlantic portions.

Delta connect you to CPH via ATL; Continental connect you there via Newark. I've flown 'em all (SAS just last month; Delta last year to CPH; Continental a few years ago)… and SAS is hands-down the best option. If you can get their "Economy Extra" it is well worth it–lots of extra luxury priced less than business class.

(Note: Lufthansa does NOT operate flights from RDU; only nonstop to Europe is American with their flight to London–that's it currently. A later reply might have meant Charlotte, which do indeed have flights with Lufthansa to Germany–connecting to CPH via MUC, if you want to drive down to Charlotte).

That’s amazing! It always seem easier to draw on the computer then on paper. Really now, to color like that makes me curious, though everyone’s style of art is different.

For starters you can attend a accredited Flight Attendant school. After that pretty much all you have to do is find an airline willing to put you in there own job training program and go from there. Secondary languages would be a bonus but not a requirement.

As far as plane crashes, the odds are pretty good. Air travel is one of the most safest modes of transportation available. I believe the latest stat was 1 in 10 million for death by plane accident. compared to Trains which is 1 in 400,000.

For the Safest airline, data only through 2005. Both South West and American West have yet to have any fatal accidents on any of there Flights.

I've never liked Air India but I heard that they recently got a lot of improvements…can't say whether it's better now though. Emirates is based in the Middle East but does flights to India, their aircrafts are very safe and have excellent in-flight service. I've also gone by Air France, but Emirates was better. For domestic flights in India, Kingfisher is my favorite.

P.S. I just Wikipedia'ed Kingfisher and Jet, and apparently Kingfisher is one of the few airlines in the world to have a five star rating from some flight-rating company, and it uses very new aircraft. Jet has new aircraft as well but there were some controversies over its quality and corrupt administration. I never had problems with either airline but I think Kingfisher's service was better.

Southwest Airlines has an excellent safety record of the major domestic airlines and they've been around for over 30 years. I've even met pilots and mechanics from other airlines that prefer to fly SWA when they aren't working because they feel they're safer. Says a lot- I think ;)

Statistically speaking- you have approximately a 1 in 8 million chance of crashing on a major airline so you're pretty safe either way. Every time you get in your car your hundreds times more likely to be in an accident so it's still safer than driving!

Travel safe and have a great new year!

Qantas – an Australian carrier – is still the only airline to never have an accident/crash or hijacking.

The major carriers such as Qantas and Singapore are all really safe. Sometimes airlines go through a period where there are some incidents. Japan Airlines went through a time where a lot of their aircraft were making unscheduled landings. The CEO vowed to change that as many passengers switched to their competitor ANA. Qantas is has had a few issues but I would have no problems flying with them.

The Singapore Airlines crash was definitely sad and there were multiple parties one could blame. Definitely there was pilot error, but weather and the airport not putting up something to block the entrance into the runway can also be contributing factors. Singapore Airlines is still a very safe airline to fly. Do not let 1 crash or 1 incident make you think the airline is not safe to fly with.

Fly Alitalia non-stop with a Boeing 767-300/ER

They arent old at all mate!

I would have to say United Airlines, I am also 15 years old and I fly them on average of 12 plane rides a year, and it is an extremely reliable airline! They do allow Minors to fly alone, and they will escort you and keep an eye on you on the plane! United is currently the 2nd larges airline!

My input on Jetblue they are a good airline but pretty expensive!! United is fairy inexpensive and safe!!

Continental and Delta are also fairly descent airlines, I have flow both before.

eldeseo Says:

none….you have just as much of a chance to have an accident in any aircraft
