How I can I travel cheap from Argentina to Brazil and/or from Argentina to Chile?
I'm going to be studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a few months, but before I leave South America I would like to try to visit Brazil and Chile. I would like to find cheaper ways than airline travel. Does anybody know a cheap–yet safe–way to travel to either country from BA (especially to Brazil)?

Regional trains are cheaper but slower than the high speed trains like Eurostar or Intercity trains. It's not always cheaper to get a Eurail pass – if you're taking a lot of long range trains, it can be a good deal. However, you do have to pay an extra fee on Eurostar, some intercity and night trains. With point to point tickets, there are sometimes discounts and promotions that you should look for. For example, here in Italy there are some tickets on Eurostar or intercity at the Amica fare which saves about 20% over the normal fare http://www.trenitalia.com/en/promozioni_offerte/promozioni/tariffa_amica.html.

There are similar deals called a "Smart fare" on some international trains. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/promozioni_offerte/promozioni/smart_price.html Milan to Amsterdam is as low as 29 euro for a seat or 39 euro for a berth in a cuchette. You can go from Venice to Zagreb for 15 euro. There are only a few seats on any given train at the special fare. These are available starting 60 days before departure.

Other countries have similar deals check the websites of the train systems and look for the promotions section.

i won’t fly until the fares are reasonable again and i’m not charged for carry on or checked luggage, allowed to bring my bottled water or juice aboard and not have to buy a cup of filthy airline tap water or argue with the agitated disturbed in the head flight attendants why i’m asking for refill the 8oz styrofoam cup because i just had one and i have to choke on my home-made meal because i’m not allowed to be thirsty and ask for refills. FUCK THAT!!! and when will checkpoint humiliation end?!

Start to really looking at rates about 6 weeks out. If they don’t drop in price over the next two weeks (nearing the 4 week window), they’re likely at the lowest price already. If it’s still too much, you might want to try an auction-type site like Priceline.
